In a bold move to advance autonomous ride-hailing, Uber Technologies Inc. (NYSE: UBER) is partnering with electric vehicle manufacturer Lucid Motors (NASDAQ: LCID) and autonomous technology firm Nuro to deploy a new robotaxi service. The partnership aims to challenge existing players, such as Waymo and Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA), by introducing a luxury-focused autonomous ride experience starting in 2026.
As part of the collaboration, Uber plans to invest up to $300 million in Lucid Motors over up to three years. The funding supports the development and production of 20,000 Lucid Gravity electric SUVs, which will be integrated with Nuro’s autonomous driving technology. These vehicles are expected to serve as the foundation of Uber’s next-generation robotaxi fleet.
What sets this initiative apart is its premium positioning. Unlike most autonomous services that focus on compact or economy vehicles, the Lucid Gravity is a high-end SUV, targeting riders who value comfort, space, and technology. Uber sees an opportunity to differentiate itself in the AV market by offering an upscale autonomous experience directly through the Uber app.
Rather than building its self-driving system—a costly and time-consuming endeavor—Uber is relying on partnerships. The strategy reflects a shift from its earlier efforts, including the divestment of its internal autonomous driving unit to Aurora Innovation in 2020. By leveraging Lucid’s EV platform and Nuro’s autonomous software, Uber aims to accelerate deployment while managing capital efficiency.
According to the companies, pilot testing and deployment are expected to begin in select U.S. cities by 2026, with scaling dependent on regulatory approvals and technical readiness. The Lucid Gravity robotaxis will also serve as a public demonstration of Nuro’s AV capabilities in a passenger-focused setting, building on its prior work with autonomous delivery.
This partnership represents a significant step for all three companies:
- Uber strengthens its role as a tech platform enabling AV services.
- Lucid gains a significant commercial order and funding at a time when EV startups are seeking financial stability.
- Nuro expands its technology from delivery bots to passenger vehicles.
If successful, the program could reshape how premium ride-hailing services are offered in the U.S., while intensifying the competition in the fast-evolving robotaxi industry.
